“SMART KIDS’ ENGLISH CORNER”: FACILITATING YOUNG LEARNERS IN A RURAL AREA TO LOVE ENGLISH

Abstract

Given the importance of English proficiency in the era of globalization and the limited exposure to English in rural communities, a training program entitled “Smart Kids’ English Corner” was designed to empower young learners aged 5 to 12 years in the village of Tapen, Argosari, Sedayu, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The program consisted of four sessions conducted in July 2025. It provided opportunities for learners to practice introducing themselves and their parents, naming colours and shapes, naming fruits and vegetables, and expressing themselves using basic English. A total of 27 learners participated and practiced spoken English in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Overall, the program aimed to foster a positive attitude and early interest in learning English, with the expectation that participants would develop an optimistic view toward the language. Despite several limitations, such as the limited relevance of some learning activities, the program can be considered successful, as the participants appeared to enjoy each learning moment throughout the sessions.

Adaninggar Septi Subekti, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta

Adaninggar obtained her doctoral degree from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Indonesia, and her M.Sc. in TESOL from University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. She currently works as a lecturer at the English Language Education Department, Faculty of Education and Humanities of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW), Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Editor-in-Chief of SAGA Journal UKDW, she is also a reviewer of MEXTESOL Journal, SiELE Journal, Englisia Journal, LLT Journal, Pedagogy Journal, and Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal. Her research interest includes L2 learners’ individual differences, Global Englishes, L2 writing, multilingualism, and inclusive education in ELT.

Alvin is an upper semester student at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His research interest is on psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology. His most recent research in the field of obstetrics and gynecology focused on the use of low-dose aspirin in high-risk pregnant women to prevent the occurrence of preeclampsia. He sees great potential in psychological issues in the future and plans to pursue a career in psychiatry.

Katharina Winahyu Premono, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Katrin is an upper semester student at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. During her studies, her research interest are in clinical pathology and internal medicine. Her latest research analyze the survival rate of hemodialysis patients with a history of diabetes mellitus and without diabetes mellitus.

Arka is an upper semester student at the Faculty of Information Technology, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, majoring in the Information System Department. His research interest is in web development and UI/UX design. He is particularly focused on creating user-centered digital experiences and functional web applications. His recent project involved developing a website for managing laboratory room reservations at the Faculty of Information Technology, aiming to streamline the booking process and improve user accessibility. Arka is passionate about building intuitive, efficient, and responsive web solutions that address practical needs in academic and organizational settings.
