Abstract

This study aims to improve students' learning outcomes in comparing denotative and connotative words in fictional works through the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model. The background of this study is the low ability of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Kakap in understanding the direct meaning and figurative meaning which is thought to be caused by the use of conventional learning models that do not actively involve students. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles, each consisting of the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of the study were 30 grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Kakap. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. The results of the study showed that there was a significant increase in the ability to compare denotative and connotative words. The average score of students increased from 72 in the pre-cycle to 84 in cycle I and 93 in cycle II with the percentage of classical completeness increasing from 33% to 67% and finally 100%. Thus, the application of the PBL model has proven effective in improving Indonesian language learning outcomes, especially in the material on comparing denotative and connotative words
