Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze students’ mathematical representation abilities in understanding three-dimensional geometry concepts based on cognitive styles: Field Dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI). The subjects were four 8th-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Singkawang, selected using the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). This qualitative descriptive study used mathematical representation tests and in-depth interviews as data collection techniques. The results showed that students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style were able to complete visual, verbal, and symbolic representation tasks well, identify geometric characteristics logically, give concrete examples, and correctly perform volume and surface area calculations. Meanwhile, students with a Field Dependent (FD) style relied on visual aids and were unable to complete symbolic tasks due to difficulty recalling formulas and lack of confidence. FD students’ verbal representations were limited to repeating information from the question without deeper reasoning.
